Summary
MHL Consulting reviewed, corrected and sealed a four-sheet electrical set for a new 30 ft by 40 ft detached agricultural barn. The township had exempted the barn from a building permit but still required sealed electrical drawings showing 2020 NEC compliance before issuing an electrical permit. The set covers a new 100A, 120/240V single-phase subpanel fed by an approximately 100 ft underground feeder.
Problem / Objective
The owner-builder had drafted the drawings and needed an engineer to verify, reconcile and seal them so the township’s electrical permit could be issued.
Process
Researched the township and Kraft Municipal Group requirements (paper-only submission, 2020 NEC) and recommended a stamp-only review (June 2026).
Collected the exemption determination, site aerial and source panel photos, and corrected the feeder length and owner details on the drawings.
Ran the whole-property spare-capacity check on the existing 200A source panel and confirmed a 10 kA fault-current basis.
Reconciled the floor plan, labeled all rooms as agricultural use, and checked grounding and bonding for a separate structure under NEC 250.32.
Delivered the sealed set (July 2026), then made cover sheet and address corrections at the client’s request.
Revised and re-sealed the set after the inspector accepted an aluminum feeder option, with the engineer’s sign-off in writing.
Payoff / Results (Metrics)
Sealed 4-sheet set delivered within about two days of the client’s go-ahead
Spare capacity on the existing 200A panel confirmed before the feeder was added
Inspector-driven changes absorbed without a new submittal cycle
Client confirmed in July 2026 that the revised set met his needs
When this applies
A farm owner, builder or contractor in southeastern Pennsylvania whose township has exempted a barn or outbuilding from a building permit but still requires PE-sealed electrical drawings. It also fits anyone adding a subpanel and underground feeder to a separate structure who has drafted their own plans and needs a licensed Pennsylvania engineer to verify and stamp them.
