Summary

MHL reviewed an electrical permit set for new IBIS trailer-door feeders at an existing FedEx Ground facility, found conductor and breaker problems, and re-checked two revisions until the set could be stamped. The building had almost no as-built documentation, so the contractor had verified capacity with power loggers.

Problem / Objective

The contractor needed a PE stamp quickly on a permit set (submitted to the authority 5/4/2026, drawing Rev 00, NEC 2017 basis) adding four new trailer feeders and raising load by roughly 320 A. The set had to hold up on code, not only be signed.

Process

  1. Reviewed Rev 00: feeder sizing, voltage drop, one-lines, load tables and short-circuit assumptions.

  2. Issued a ten-item comment list: for example, a #4 AWG feeder on a 100 A breaker (NEC 240.4(B)), all four feeders above the drawing’s own 3% voltage drop target, and a 400 A versus 300 A breaker label conflict.

  3. Checked the contractor’s Rev 01 and found the upsized conductors still failed once four current-carrying conductors and 60 C termination limits were applied (NEC 110.14(C)).

  4. Specified fixes: MDP2 to IBIS PDP breaker reduced from 400 A to 300 A; all four trailer feeders set to #1 AWG Cu in 1-1/2 inch EMT.

  5. Reviewed Rev 02 and returned the stamped set.

Payoff / Results (Metrics)

  • Full review comments returned within about one day of the request

  • Three undersized or non-compliant feeder conditions found and corrected before submittal

  • All four IBIS trailer feeders standardized to one conductor and conduit spec

  • Stamped Rev 02 returned 5/12/2026

When this applies

An electrical contractor adding trailer-door or conveyor power to an existing distribution center in Phoenix where as-built records are thin and the permit set needs an engineer to check feeder ampacity, voltage drop and fault current before stamping. Also relevant to national-account facility expansions that need a fast PE turnaround without skipping the code check.
