  • Load, conductor derating and fault-current calculations

  • In-kind service breaker replacement documentation

  • Written response to County Land Use corrections

Summary

A contractor needed a sealed permit package to add six 480V forklift battery chargers to an occupied warehouse and to replace the building’s obsolete 2,000A main breaker with its manufacturer-superseded part. MHL reviewed the contractor’s preliminary one-line against the building’s County-approved 2020 record set, corrected it, and issued the sealed package for County of Riverside plan review.

Problem / Objective

The contractor had an open County permit application and a Land Use correction letter requiring a site plan and floor plan. The objective was a sealed, code-compliant package that closed those corrections and would hold up in electrical plan check.

Process

  1. Compared the contractor’s one-line to the 2020 approved set and nameplate photos; found twelve items to fix before sealing.

  2. Confirmed the AHJ is the County, not the City of Perris, and moved all citations to the 2025 California Electrical Code (County Ordinance 457).

  3. Built the load basis from charger nameplate data: six EnerSys EF3-18-865 units at 11A, 480V, three-phase (66A connected, 82.5A at the continuous-load factor).

  4. Rechecked short-circuit ratings: the new branch breakers had to be fully rated or part of a listed series combination under CEC 240.86(B) (19,180A available at the panel of record, rated 100,000A series), replacing the “10 kAIC” shown on the contractor’s sheet.

  5. Reviewed the existing main’s trip-unit settings from a field photo and advised holding the breaker order until the trip log and a CEC 220.87 demand recording were read.

Payoff / Results (Metrics)

  • Sealed package issued within days of award, with site plan and floor plan answering both Land Use corrections.

  • Preliminary drawings corrected for wrong jurisdiction, out-of-date code editions, understated interrupting ratings and unadjusted conductor ampacity.

When this applies

An electrical contractor adding battery chargers or other 480V industrial loads to an existing warehouse in Riverside County or elsewhere in Southern California Edison territory. Also relevant if a service-side breaker is obsolete and being replaced in kind, or if your preliminary one-line cites the wrong AHJ, older code editions, or low AIC ratings and needs a PE to correct it before plan check.
