Summary

MHL Consulting prepared a permit drawing set for Phase 1 of a warehouse of roughly 600,000 SF, covering a rack storage area of about 97,600 SF fed from an existing 277/480V, 2000A service. After the City of Ontario commented on the combined lighting and forklift charging submittal, MHL added a main switchboard load calculation and reviewed available fault current for new panels.

Problem / Objective

The owner released the building in phases and needed a simple, permit-ready Phase 1 lighting set that matched a format the City had accepted before.

Process

  1. Reviewed the floor plans, fixture cut sheets and sensor specs, then agreed the scope with the client (January 2026).

  2. Marked 200 linear high-bay LED fixtures with motion sensors and 0-10V dimming, and identified 75 battery-backup emergency fixtures, fed from existing panels WHA and WHB.

  3. Issued a draft, applied client changes, including a row-order correction and the client’s instruction to move code references to the 2025 editions (February 2026).

  4. Took on the City’s comment requesting a load calculation for the 2000A main switchboard, covering forklift charging drawings prepared by another firm (March 2026).

  5. Checked available fault current (about 65 kA at the main, about 29 kA at one new panel) and specified 35 kAIC panels for the added charging panels.

  6. Supported the demand basis with the utility bill demand data available, then delivered the stamped set and a combined PDF for City resubmittal (March 2026).

Payoff / Results (Metrics)

  • Stamped Phase 1 lighting and emergency lighting set delivered on the client’s schedule in February 2026

  • City load-calculation comment answered with a stamped, combined resubmittal in March 2026

  • Fault-current check caught an undersized 22 kA panel rating before resubmittal

  • Client indicated further phases and projects would follow

When this applies

A developer, tenant-improvement contractor or general contractor handling a phased warehouse project in the Inland Empire and needing a California PE for LED high-bay lighting, emergency battery-backup fixtures, or forklift charging load calculations. It also fits projects where a City of Ontario comment asks for a main switchboard load calculation or short-circuit rating check.
