Summary
A four-unit apartment building lost power when APS de-energized its damaged 400 A, four-position meter pack. MHL produced a stamped like-for-like replacement package overnight so the contractor could proceed and file with the City of Phoenix.
Problem / Objective
The utility would not re-energize until a new meter pack was set. The contractor’s earlier meter pack had been rejected by the City under 2023 NEC 230.62(C), and the field inspector wanted fault current documentation. The objective was a permit-ready package with no service upgrade.
Process
Took the contractor’s photos, panel data, the manufacturer cut sheet for a 400 A meter pack and the APS short-circuit table.
Confirmed the 400 A, 120/240 V single-phase underground service and four 100 A unit feeds (1/0 aluminum) stay unchanged.
Drafted the one-line, code narrative (barriered compartments per 230.62(C)) and a point-to-point fault current study; sent a review-only draft.
Corrected the draft for 2-pole breakers and existing #4 aluminum grounds noted by the contractor.
Issued the PE-stamped set for SHAPE PHX submittal, noting the surge protective device required under NEC 2023 230.67.
Payoff / Results (Metrics)
Stamped drawings delivered the morning after the request
Package addressed both the barrier issue that caused the earlier rejection and the inspector’s fault-current request
Service was restored; the client reported APS scheduling caused one more day without power
When this applies
An electrician or property manager in the City of Phoenix replacing a damaged or non-compliant multi-meter service (400 A or larger, which cannot use over-the-counter permitting) after an APS shutoff. Also relevant if a prior meter pack was rejected for barrier or AIC reasons and you need a stamped one-line and fault current study fast.
